What happens with a Deering Grant?
My name is Mark Boyd and I am the Managing Director of N-Sid-Sen Camp & Conference Center in Harrison, Idaho. It was with great excitement that we received a Deering Grant in 2015. This grant will allow us to get to and participate in the leadership of the 2015 Focus Event, December 4-6, at Cedar Ridge Camp and Retreat Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Focus Event is a joint venture of the Presbyterian Church Camp and Conference Association (PCCCA) and the Outdoor Ministries Association of the United Church of Christ (OMA-UCC). The Focus Event is designed for anyone who feels called to Camp and Conference Ministry as a career. This may or may not be folks from the hosting denominations. Last year we had folks from the UCC, Prebyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, and the Disciples of Christ.
We provide workshops, panel discussions, camp tour, games, and of course worship. Time is spent talking about the search committee from the camp as well as the interview process. It is refreshing to know that folks are looking at camp as more than just a summer experience. We spend our time discussing what happens after the summer ends and how we do the behind the scenes stuff, i.e. budgets, personnel, programs, food service, maintenance, and how it is all part of the same. It is all the Ministry of Hospitality that we call camp. And then we send them off with a listing of all the job opportunities that are out there.
As much fun as it is to be a part of this incredible event, it is not the real reason we attend. It is seeing these folks who have a desire, a passion, a calling to do what we do. It is that realization that there are folks out there who will carry that torch on for us. It's good to know that there are folks just as crazy as us who truly want to live, breathe and dream camp. Hallelujah, Praise God. Amen.
